SAINT PIERRE CHURCH
St.
Pierre church is what remains of the ancient Saint Père en Vallée
abbey, where Saint Gilduin's tomb was discovered and is also the presumed
site of Saint Fulbert's grave, Bishop of Chartres, in the beginning
of year one thousand. St Pierre's with its history and its elegant and
slender architecture became the reliquary shrine to the precious remains
of famous Chartres saints. Ornamented with guilloche in the style of
jewellers, inlaid with precious stones, decorated with statues, St Pierre
is the architectural treasure of the lower city, built by master stone
and glass craftsmen. On the medieval tower with its rough steeple porch,
lies the hieratic reinvented recumbent statue of Saint Fulbert of Chartres.
Fixed scene.
Music by Johann Sebastien Bach.
