Lavoir St Hilaire
The St Hilaire wash-house
"River related crafts"
How
can we ignore those who made their mark, such as Bouju, saved
from anonymity by the bridge which bears his name, or the thousands
of others who lived and worked along the riverbanks. Moving shadows
behind the drying white sheets are those of the working craftsmen
such as water carriers, carders, millers and paper makers, tanners
and tawers, boatmen with their holds full of wine, barges carrying
salt and herring from Flanders, pimpernel, barbel and eel fishermen,
the whole village lived with the flow of the river.
