The
lower town is wrapped in constant mist due to the permanent dampness
caused by the river as well as by the trades and crafts that used
the held back waters (mills, dying mills and tanneries) thus maintaining
a permanent humid atmosphere The Saint Père mill,
with its wooden wheels driven by the strong current from La Courtille,
stands by the "Pont de la Grenouillère". In 1200,
Guillaume le Vidame gave this mill to the Saint Père en
Vallée Abbey monks which is one of the twenty paddle wheel
mills scattered along the river Eure : grain mills and tanning
mills worked on the river until the 19th century to mill wheat
and crush wood. Some of the other mills were named Captivel and
Tomblaine, Tibelin and Roger, Chaume and Cinq Ruelles, Cochefilet
